When a salvage titled vehicle has been rebuilt or repaired for re-driving, the title status may change from recovered to “rebuilt.” The status of a salvage title can only be changed after a certified state auto inspector reviews the vehicle and finds it roadworthy.
Some self-employed mechanics make a living by buying salvage vehicles at auctions, repairing (rebuilding) them, and then selling them for profit. It is similar to flipping houses.
If you plan to do this, just be careful of the risk involved. When you buy cars at auction (you usually need a license to do so), you often don’t really know how bad they are until you take possession of them.
