Different Types of Rechargeable Batteries and Their Applications

You may have come across various types of batteries in your lifetime. Batteries are used in most of the things around you, like wall clocks, television remotes, alarms, smoke detectors, vars, trucks, etc., that use small to large batteries. The battery is essential for providing power to wireless electronic gadgets. 

There are two major types of batteries: primary or non-rechargeable batteries and secondary or rechargeable batteries. Primary batteries are primarily used in portable electrical devices like clocks, cameras, toys, lights, etc. They cannot be recharged once the power runs out. They are discarded hence also called disposable batteries. That is why they are majorly used in domestic applications. On the other hand, secondary batteries can be charged with electricity after it runs out of charge hence called rechargeable batteries. Our primary focus here is on secondary batteries like 9V rechargeable battery and their applications. 

Secondary Batteries

Secondary batteries, as previously mentioned, are rechargeable batteries because they can regain their original state once current is passed through the cells and the chemical status of the battery is restored to the original one, like the best 9V rechargeable battery. But for this, the current passing through the cells must be passed in the opposite direction of its discharge. 

There are two ways in which secondary batteries can be used:

In the primary category of applications, the secondary batteries are used as power storage houses connected to the primary energy source, which is also charged and provides power when needed. Examples of such applications include the UPS called Uninterrupted Power Supplies, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, etc. 

The secondary category of applications involves the usage of secondary batteries in electrical devices that can be recharged after it is entirely or almost discharged, like 9V rechargeable batteries. This is done with the help of a proper charging mechanism with devices like chargers that are different for different devices. Examples of such devices are laptops, mobile phones, electric vehicles, etc. 

Secondary batteries might be lagging behind primary batteries in terms of energy density. Still, they are better than them in many other aspects like low-temperature performance, power density, flat discharge curves, high discharge rate, etc. 

Types of Secondary Batteries

Some of the most common secondary batteries, like Argos 9V rechargeable batteries, are as follows.

Lead-Acid Batteries

Lead-acid batteries are the most common types of rechargeable batteries that have been used for more than a century. You will find these batteries with various specifications like small sealed cells with a capacity of 1 Ah and giant cells with 12,000 AH.

Majorly these batteries are used in the automotive industries in the SLI batteries like energizer 9V rechargeable batteries. Other applications include emergency power, energy storage, communication systems, emergency lighting, etc. In terms of electrical efficiency, they are highly efficient with a percentage range of 70-80%. Such high efficiency makes them suitable to be used for energy storage and electric vehicles. 

Nickel-Cadmium Batteries

As a companion of lead-acid batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries are among the oldest and most used rechargeable batteries, like 9v rechargeable batteries. These batteries have a long life and are highly durable. They last long because they can be subjected to very high rates of discharge and can work in various temperature ranges. Ni-Cd batteries have cathode and anode for which it uses Nickel Oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) and Cadmium metal (Cd), respectively. Consumer batteries usually have an online voltage of 1.2V. one disadvantage of these batteries is that they tend to lose their capacity over time when charged after being partially discharged.

Nickel – Metal Hydride Batteries

These batteries are better and more preferred than nickel-cadmium batteries because of their lower environmental impacts. It has a nominal voltage greater than Ni-Cd, which is 1.25V. They are considered a better and extended version of Nickel – Hydrogen Electrode Batteries explicitly used in satellite applications. It consists of positive and negative electrodes such as Nickel Oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) and a metal alloy, respectively. The negative electrodes store hydrogen reversibly. They have a higher power density of 100 Wh/Kg.

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries like Energizer 9V rechargeable batteries have become very popular in the past few decades. More than 50% of the consumer market has shifted towards the use of these phenomenal rechargeable batteries. The most significant applications of these batteries are in electronic gadgets like laptops, smartphones, cameras, etc. they can operate at a wide range of temperatures and have a longer life span. That is why nickel-cadmium batteries are the most popular nowadays and are also very effective.
